October Holidays From Around the World

It’s hard to believe the end of 2022 is fast approaching! At Appen, we love hearing from our Crowd members to learn more about the special occasions they celebrate. Read on to discover what our Contributors around the world celebrate during October. 

October 8, Mawlid an-an Nabi ash-Sharif (multiple countries)

Mawlid derives from the Arabic word ولد, meaning to give birth, bear a child, descendant.

Mawlid an-nabaw, which translates to “birth of the prophet,” celebrates the Islamic prophet Muhammad, and dates back to the early days of Islam. 

October 12, Our Lady of Aparecida Feast Day (Brazil)

During this holiday, the Catholic Church crowns the statue and proclaims her patroness of Brazil.

Brazil celebrates the feast day of Our Lady of Aparecida, one title of the Virgin Mary, in mid-October. The Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady Aparecida, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, houses the statue of the Virgin Marty. 

October 14, Liberation Day (Yemen)

Yemen is sometimes called, “The Happy Land.”

Liberation Day is a public holiday celebrated in the Republic of Yemen during October. It honors the start of the Radfan Uprising against British rule during 1963.

October 31, Halloween (multiple countries)

The term jack-o-lantern refers to an old legend about a night watchman who carries a lantern.

Originally known as “All Hallow’s Eve,” many countries around the globe celebrate this holiday on the last day of October, to commemorate Allhallowtide, a Western Christian feast dedicated to remembering saints (or hallows), martyrs, and people no longer with us.
