Mira Murati: Chief Technology Officer, ChatGPT
ChatGPT surpassed Bitcoin among popular search terms, according to Google Trends earlier this year
If you have been following recent news about AI, you’ve definitely heard of ChatGPT. It is considered to be the most advanced AI chatbot currently on the market. Currently the Chief Technology Officer of OpenAI, the startup company behind ChatGPT, Mira Murati has been working in the world of tech for the past few years.
She has pushed for OpenAI products, such as ChatGPT, to be tested publicly. “You could make technological progress in a vacuum without real-world contacts,” she tells Fast Company. “But then the question is, Are you actually moving in the right direction?” Murati is also an advocate for the regulation of AI.
Joy Buolamwini: Founder, Algorithmic Justice League
Buolamwini advises world leaders, policymakers, and executives on redressing algorithmic harms
Joy Buolamwini has been described as “the conscience of the A.I. revolution.”As a graduate student at MIT, she brought to light the severe issues with facial recognition systems. Many were plagued with racial and gender prejudices that were seen as discriminatory and a violation of human rights. In response, Amazon, Microsoft and IBM pulled out of using facial recognition software such as Microsoft Face.
In 2020, Buolamwini starred in the Netflix documentary “Coded Bias” that chronicled her research at MIT and followed her journey to push for U.S. legislation against bias in algorithms.
Fei-Fei Li: Professor of Computer Science, Stanford University
Wired magazine described Li as, “bringing humanity to AI”
Born in Beijing, Li is a computer scientist known for establishing ImageNet, which helped advance computer vision throughout the 2010s. Computer vision is the process of acquiring, processing, and analyzing digital images and extracting data. Li has had a long and fruitful career in AI. She currently serves as the Professor of Computer Science at Standford and formerly was board director at Twitter.
She is Co-Director of both the Stanford Institute of Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence and Standord Vision and Learning Lab. She co-founded AI4All, a non-profit organization that focuses on increasing diversity, in 2017. Li’s research spans many different subjects including machine learning, deep learning, and cognitive neuroscience.
